My experience-Trying to conceive, worried about the future of my go-to regimen

My husband and I are trying for our first baby. Exciting!

However, I am concerned about how I am going to manage my migraines during pregnancy.

My migraines stem from cervicogenic headaches, most specifically occipital neuralgia. The pain has been severe enough to send me to the ER twice. Of course there’s excruciating pain, I will vomit until I am dry heaving, my vision is blurred, and so on.

Thankfully, I seem to have found a regimen that works. I take cymbalta (duloxetine) 60mg mainly for depression but it’s also known to help with chronic pain. I also get Botox every three months which has been a game changer. I do still get a breakthrough migraine every now in then of moderate severity, which I can usually knock out with ibuprofen or toradol.

With pregnancy hopefully in my future, I am scared about how I will manage without my medicine. My cymbalta may need changed (my prescribing psych said it should be okay for pregnancy but my OB may want to switch it). Can’t get the Botox while pregnant. And obviously cannot take NSAIDs either. I know Tylenol is an option, but unfortunately Tylenol has never helped me much with pain in the past.

Those of you that have gone through pregnancy, what medication options worked for you? Did your OBGYN or neurologist manage the medications during your pregnancy? (I do not currently have a neurologist, last one I saw was useless). I’ve never been pregnant before either so I am not sure how all this will work. I plan to talk to my OBGYN about this when I do have my first prenatal appointment one day. I’ve thought about asking about sumatriptan but I’ve never given it a try. I’m hoping I’ll be one of those that has less migraines during pregnancy, but I haven’t been able to identify any consistent triggers or correlation to my hormones thus far.

I am also going to invest in massage therapy throughout pregnancy to hopefully help prevent the headaches in the first place.

Thank you in advance for sharing your experiences!
