My experience-Migraine Aphasia -- Anyone Figured Out Why? Triggers?
Hey all,
I'm interested to hear what root causes, if any, you've been able to identify (and hopefully treat) regarding migraines, and particularly migraines with aphasia/confusion.
For the past maybe 4 years or so, I've had periodic episodes of what I initially called dizzy spells, although that was never quite the right description. It'd feel like a wave of something almost tingly passing over my head, and over time I realized that was immediately followed by a short episode of aphasia. It's also usually followed (and/or preceded) by a dull or throbbing headache and extreme tiredness, difficulty focusing, etc.
The actual aphasia aspect is usually brief, about 30-90 seconds, although it can feel like I'm still a bit slow to piece words together or remember things properly in the aftermath for a while. While it's happening, sentences don't make sense to me -- I can hear what someone's saying, but it's sounds like gibberish or my brain is interpreting it inaccurately, and likewise, I can't string together a proper sentence. I'll usually have these brief 90 second episodes every 1-2 hours for a 24-36 hour period. And I'll often feel very, very tired, even if I slept fine the night before.
What's especially odd to me is that these aphasia episodes have been pretty regular lately: about once every 4-6 weeks for the past year, at least.
I've seen a neurologist, and nothing seems amiss physiologically. The only thread I'm currently still following up on is in my MRI, where they observed "questionable atrophy of the right optic nerve," so I've scheduled an appointment with an ophthalmologist to rule anything out there, as I've also occasionally had what sound like migraine auras where I'll temporarily see flashing around my vision, or it'll temporarily cloud up before clearing. I do wear contacts.
I have a mechanical heart valve, which was put in place after open heart surgery about 10 years ago, and I'm on a regular blood thinner medication for that. My recent cardiology tests show a healthy heart -- healthier than it's ever been. My neurologist ran out of things to test for, and suggested it may be an unexplained side effect of that surgery, but also suggested I try a low-dose epilepsy medication (the prominent side effect of which is rage -- yikes). I'm an otherwise pretty healthy 32yo male.
So, all that being said: Have any of you been able to identify a root cause or trigger for your migraine aphasia? Any vitamin/nutrition deficiencies? Environmental triggers? And have you found anything that seems to help both with preventing these episodes in the first place or stopping them when they come on?
