My experience-Is your tension headache caused by a chemical or hormone imbalance? How did you know? What do you take to fix this?

I've been reading up on chronic tension headaches and some articles say they now think they are caused by chemical or hormone imbalances.

When this is the case, they say to take tricyclic antidepressants like amitriptyline.

I previously thought these drugs were recommended for their pain killing effect, not to change body chemistry. I read they are given at lower doses than they would be for depression, which is why I thought they didn't affect chemistry levels.

Some articles I've read, say that it's a chemical imbalance, but also that stress, anxiety, guilt etc also play a part in causing the headaches. So what is it? Chemical imbalance or emotional issues? Or are the two tightly interwoven with one causing the other eg emotional issues cause imbalance and vice versa?

I've spent years working on the physical potential causes of headache without much luck.

I should probably try antidepressants but I'm scared to mess around with my chemicals and hormones.

Has anyone tried them?
