Hello, I am Sanjli Mehta. I am a student at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. This study is being conducted as a part of my dissertation requirement for the Psy.D in Clinical Psychology program. Thank you so much to those of you who have already participated! I still need a few more participants, so for those of you who haven't participated yet, please consider doing so or sharing with people who you think may be interested. I have had several support people not complete their surveys, so please remind your support person to complete their survey if they haven't already. I appreciate all of you!

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between people with chronic headaches and their support people. Specifically, this study seeks to investigate if there is a relationship between anxiety and depression in people with chronic headaches and caregiver burden or strain in their support person.

Eligibility Criteria: Participants must be between the ages of 18 to 90, have an understanding and ability to communicate in English, at least a 6th grade level of education, and must not have any self-reported medical or psychiatric comorbidities that prevent survey completion. The person with chronic headaches must have a diagnosed headache disorder that meets the criteria for chronicity for that disorder and must have someone who provides support related to their headaches. The support person must provide support related to someone’s headaches and cannot be paid for this support.

(For reference, a support person is someone who provides any kind of support including emotional support, empathy, listening, advice, tangible support such as help with medications and driving, etc. So long as they are not paid for the support and the support is related to headaches, they qualify as a support person.)

Procedures: For this study you will be asked to complete a survey, which will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. If you are the person with chronic headaches, this survey will include demographic questions, how long you have had your headache diagnosis, what your headache diagnosis is, and what (if any) are your psychiatric diagnosis/diagnoses. You will then be asked to complete a short self-report measure on anxiety and a short self-report measure on depression.

If you are the support person, this survey will include demographic questions, how long you have been providing support to the identified person with chronic headaches, and what (if any) are your psychiatric diagnosis/diagnoses. You will then be asked to complete a brief measure of caregiver burden.

Following the completion of your survey, if you are the person with chronic headaches, you will then be asked to ask your support person, or anyone who provides support to you related to your headaches who is not a professional caregiver, to complete a survey on caregiver burden. If you are the identified support person, you will be asked to ask the person you are providing support to related to chronic headaches to complete a survey about anxiety and depression.

If you are the first person of the pair to finish, you will be asked to write down your assigned participant identification number and share it with the second person completing the survey. If you are the second person completing the survey, you will be asked to enter the number the first person gave you in the appropriate box.
