My experience-I’m new to being treated for migraines, and I’m not sure what to expect.

I’ve been suffering with migraines since I was under the age of ten. I did not receive medical care for really anything as a child, and it left me very unable to advocate for myself.

Recently I’ve been suffering a number of symptoms, including daily headaches on top of the migraines I’d have 2-4 times a month. I disclosed for the first time in my life to a doctor that I’ve been suffering with these migraines since I was very young. She was able to prescribe medication to be taken at the onset of a migraine (Maxalt? I believe).

I was referred to a neurologist, and I had my first appointment last week. She prescribed me propranolol and magnesium oxide, which I’ve started taking.

I got a long lecture from both the family doctor and the neurologist about not taking Advil anymore. I’ve been using Advil to manage headaches since I was maybe 6 years old. Taking 400mg up to 4 times a day as needed recently it’s been almost daily just to remain functional.

Is the propranolol something that takes time to be effective, or is it something that I’d know is or isn’t working pretty immediately? I’m taking it at bedtime as prescribed, but it seems to have no effect.

I took Maxalt for the first time today due to the severity of my headache, as I’ve felt it creeping towards full migraine all morning, but that also seemed to have no effect whatsoever.

I am scheduled to have an MRI on May 30th. I follow up with neurology in June.

I know the med game may be trial and error, but I am just really desperate for some relief as I can count the days I’ve had in 2023 without a headache on one hand.

If anyone is able to share their experience with having an MRI or different medications, that would be appreciated.
