My experience-Sharing my little story

Since 2 years my migraine changed drastically.

I ( 47M ) have horrible migraines since my 20-ish. For one year I was under heavy painkiller, triptan and anything my doctor threw at me. At that point my life was only jumping from one migraine to another one.

I started to note down possible triggers and luckily I could ( often ) change everything around me to manage those :

  • no perfume

  • regular sleep, never late to wake up

  • A moderate caffeine intake, with no variation

  • avoid food enhancer ( glutamate )

  • regular meal time

  • no beer or wine

  • no big emotions/trying not to get too much upset

  • being careful around noises and lights

  • being careful about crowded events ( typically Christmas/NY with a lit of persons/commotion ).

This allowed me to go slowly to one migraine a month then one maybe every 6 months.

My migraines have always felt the same : usually an aura ( light feels stronger, sound super loud, feels like tunnel vision ), always the same place and side that hurts, I need to isolate myself and if I'm lucky I can drink a couple of glasses and try to sleep. If I manage to fall asleep, the migraine will be gone when I wake up. Before this method I had to take triptans it always made me yawn so much and caused this weird pain in my jaws.

After the migraine is gone I would feel very slow in my head for one day or more. Yet at the same time so relaxed, like if I took a chill pill, nothing could phase me.

This all changed roughly 2 years ago after a thunderclap headache. I have nowadays aura, that doesn't transform into a migraine; but I skip directly to the after migraine parts where I feel slow/limited and this parts feel longer.

As I cannot avoid one of my main trigger, I'm back on a more frequent migraine state, but without the pain.

I was really alarmed by the thunderclap headache as I also have a new symptom ( Raynaud's phenomenon ) and went for another round of scanner and IRM. Which didn't show any sign of stroke and only what my neuro described as the typical WMHs from someone who had migraines for a long time.

My dad had WMHs and had a sharp decline in mental capacity and his ability to walk. He died from a massive stroke at 80 four years ago.

Listening to my neuro about my WMHs being typical for someone with a migraine history I felt validated that there was a proof of my pains as I heard so many times that I was annoying with my 'issues'. But at the same time, thinking about my dad and his decline, his worries about his brain and his suffering at the end, I can see the hand I have been dealt with.

There is no boohoo here, just me sharing my little story. I wish you will all find a way to manage your own little pains, find a way to cope what's thrown at you and enjoy what's out there for you on your journey.
