My experience-first migraine w a brain stem aura/horrible experience w emergency services

hi all, im writing this because I experienced what I think was a brainstem aura migraine last night for the first time in my history of migraines (been having since 2012 when i was 14 to now at age 24). typically, my migraines start as a aura where i’ll have difficulty reading & spots in my vision before the headache sets in but it usually can be helped with some excedrin. the only other experience i’ve has that was slightly similar was one hemiplegic migraine a few years ago that caused numbness/pins and needles on my right side.

the onset last night was so sudden and the symptoms were so severe (extreme lightheadedness, tingling from head to upper shoulders, numbness in face, weakness in legs/loss of balance, slurred speech & confusion, inability to stand without passing out) that I called 911 because I thought I was having a stroke, which almost sounds silly but since a stroke can happen at any age I didn’t want to take any risks.

I was so scared I was crying because i’d never experienced anything like that but when the paramedics came they were so condescending and rude and I honestly think they thought I was drunk or on drugs even though i’d just gotten home from work & was just trying to get ready to go to bed after working two back to back doubles in emergency services myself.

they didn’t want to transport me or help me walk down my three flights of stairs even after their on call nurse determined I should go to the hospital & it wasn’t until I got there that I realized they never even did a stroke assessment on scene but kept stating over their radios that my stroke assessment was negative, i’ve never felt so disrespected before and I couldn’t even defend myself because I felt so horrible

the headache onset didn’t begin until after I was admitted to the ER and was sent to the waiting room where I was told the estimated wait time was 12+ hours after already being there for 3, which is when I had time to look into other causes for those symptoms which is when I learned about brain stem migraines.

eventually I left the ER without being seen because I was just too tired from all my overtime at work and couldn’t handle staying up even more hours.

im not sure why i’m writing this, maybe because I just want to hear that I wasn’t stupid for trying to get help or want to know if other people have experienced treatment like this? I honestly want to put in a complaint against those paramedics because since I work in emergency services I don’t want anyone else to be treated like that when they’re scared and worried about their health. I didn’t get anyone’s name or ID numbers though because I felt so ill, if anyone has any suggestions on how I could even go about getting that info.

also is it normal to start experiencing different kinds of migraines like this? mine can be severe but nothing even remotely close to this

thanks for taking the time to read my post, this silly little chronic migraine sufferer appreciates it <3 (ps i’ve set up a doctors appointment as well so hopefully that will help)
