My experience-New Migraine Experience - Freaked Me Out

Hi all, I just had a strange migraine experience and wanted to share and see if anyone else has had similar.

Background: I (35F) was diagnosed with migraine with aura when I was 15. Been on topamax since then and up until this past December as my hubs and I are thinking about kids soon. I take goody’s powder when I suspect that I’m getting a migraine and maxalt when I am more sure of it as an abortive. My migraines start with small visual disturbances followed by neck pain and then the migraine pain.

This was different: I was at work and I got what I thought was a massive floater across my right eye that lasted for at least a half hour. It was hurting my vision and I started getting worried that my retina was detaching or something.

About a half hour/hour after it started, I started feeling weak and sweaty. I took a goody’s powder and drank some water. The room I was in was warm, so I went outside to get some air. I sat on a bench and broke out into a full on cold sweat that -no lie- lasted for over 2hrs. I had trouble speaking, thinking (besides wondering if I was having a stroke), and walking - I was too weak.

Work said I could go home and I took a maxalt as soon as I walked in and slept for 3hrs. I’m now realizing that while I physically felt like I was having a migraine, I didn’t have head/neck pain (or my other symptoms were much more severe).

So. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Was this an ocular migraine? DID I have a stroke? Goodness. It was awful.

I will say, I had every trigger under the sun and have been surprised that it’s taken this long to get an attack in the past week. But still, this was different and scary.

Editing to add: I’m American living in the UK with access to the NHS. I was diagnosed and medicated by a neurologist in the states, but have been waiting on a referral to a neurologist in the NHS to go through for the past 6 months. My GP is fine to keep prescribing my medication, but it’ll be awhile before it goes further than them to a neurologist.
